Narrative:

Given a heading/speed change while deviating for WX. First officer switched from performance to speed mode not noticing the shallow descent. We caught our deviation at 10800 ft and bottomed out at 10680 ft MSL. Approach queried our altitude as we were leveling back at 11000 ft MSL. He then cleared us to 7000 ft MSL.

Title: MD80S ACFT WITH DSCNT CLRNC TO 11000 FT, FO SWITCHED FROM PERFORMANCE TO SPD MODE AND ALT WAS NOT CAPTURED AS ACFT DSNDED BELOW ASSIGNED.

Narrative: GIVEN A HDG/SPD CHANGE WHILE DEVIATING FOR WX. FO SWITCHED FROM PERFORMANCE TO SPD MODE NOT NOTICING THE SHALLOW DSCNT. WE CAUGHT OUR DEV AT 10800 FT AND BOTTOMED OUT AT 10680 FT MSL. APCH QUERIED OUR ALT AS WE WERE LEVELING BACK AT 11000 FT MSL. HE THEN CLRED US TO 7000 FT MSL.
