Narrative:

During instrument competency check we tracked the mxq VOR R-090 to/from mxq as we passed over iln airport. We monitored CTAF (tower) 119.47 approximately 15 mi out and until about 15 mi clear. We thought the tower class D was inactive until later in the day based on discussions with other pilots. After checking with flight service, we realized that the tower opened at XY30Z, not local time and realized we inadvertently flew through the class D airspace. Ways to avoid this: publish tower times on charts (sectional).
