Narrative:
Just after starting descent into dfw, flight attendant entered cockpit and said there was a strong smell of gas in the cabin. I had the first officer go back and verify smell. He said he smelled an odor but not fuel smell. Flight attendant returned to cockpit and said smell was very strong and people were holding handkerchiefs over their noses. I then declared an emergency to dfw. I requested crash crew to meet aircraft and have a fireman board aircraft through aft stairs after we cleared the runway. By this time smell was not near as strong and after fireman boarded aircraft and found only a faint odor, decided to taxi aircraft to gate and deplane passenger. I determined that to evacuate/evacuation the aircraft was not necessary or warranted since the problem was no longer apparent.

Title: MD80S ACFT ARRIVING AT DFW FLT ATTENDANT ALERTED COCKPIT CREW OF GAS-LIKE SMELL IN CABIN. FO CHKED ON IT AND SAID IT WAS NOT GAS. RPTR CAPT DECLARED EMER AND LANDED AT DFW. FIRE CREW BOARDED ACFT AND SMELL HAD ALMOST DISSIPATED.
Narrative: JUST AFTER STARTING DSCNT INTO DFW, FLT ATTENDANT ENTERED COCKPIT AND SAID THERE WAS A STRONG SMELL OF GAS IN THE CABIN. I HAD THE FO GO BACK AND VERIFY SMELL. HE SAID HE SMELLED AN ODOR BUT NOT FUEL SMELL. FLT ATTENDANT RETURNED TO COCKPIT AND SAID SMELL WAS VERY STRONG AND PEOPLE WERE HOLDING HANDKERCHIEFS OVER THEIR NOSES. I THEN DECLARED AN EMER TO DFW. I REQUESTED CRASH CREW TO MEET ACFT AND HAVE A FIREMAN BOARD ACFT THROUGH AFT STAIRS AFTER WE CLRED THE RWY. BY THIS TIME SMELL WAS NOT NEAR AS STRONG AND AFTER FIREMAN BOARDED ACFT AND FOUND ONLY A FAINT ODOR, DECIDED TO TAXI ACFT TO GATE AND DEPLANE PAX. I DETERMINED THAT TO EVAC THE ACFT WAS NOT NECESSARY OR WARRANTED SINCE THE PROB WAS NO LONGER APPARENT.
