Narrative:

Climbing to 27000 ft, controller questioned our position on the airway. During discussion of aircraft position, altitude capture did not occur resulting in deviation of 600 ft high. I thought I had altitude capture armed, but apparently it had not been engaged. While checking on our position, per controller request, all 3 pilots became preoccupied with horizontal navigation and missed checking and monitoring leveloff altitude. When deviation was recognized, aircraft was corrected back to altitude.
