Narrative:
After takeoff from pvg in VFR, visibility 4+ mi, received (IFR clearance) from orf approach. Cleared to climb on course to 17000 ft to hcm VOR. All smooth up to about 5300 ft. The aircraft gave a great shudder and vibration, loss of manifold pressure to 1800-2000 ft. I immediately announced to orf approach I had a very rough running engine and would like vectors to orf. I was turned to 070 degrees and realized we were about 15 mi west of orf and requested vectors to williamsburg international. That showed 6 mi. Was told to descend to 3000 ft and maintain. I replied that I would not descend and needed all the altitude I could get. I was told to expect back course runway 25. I told the controller I didn't have time to set up for that. I was given a contact approach to runway 25. Landing was good and the fire department took a report when they met us. The FAA had called the FBO asking what happened. They were told I was very well pleased with ATC response.

Title: PLT OF SMA HAS VIBRATION AND LOSS OF MANIFOLD PRESSURE DURING CLB. REQUESTS AND RECEIVES VECTORS TO NEARBY ARPT.
Narrative: AFTER TKOF FROM PVG IN VFR, VISIBILITY 4+ MI, RECEIVED (IFR CLRNC) FROM ORF APCH. CLRED TO CLB ON COURSE TO 17000 FT TO HCM VOR. ALL SMOOTH UP TO ABOUT 5300 FT. THE ACFT GAVE A GREAT SHUDDER AND VIBRATION, LOSS OF MANIFOLD PRESSURE TO 1800-2000 FT. I IMMEDIATELY ANNOUNCED TO ORF APCH I HAD A VERY ROUGH RUNNING ENG AND WOULD LIKE VECTORS TO ORF. I WAS TURNED TO 070 DEGS AND REALIZED WE WERE ABOUT 15 MI W OF ORF AND REQUESTED VECTORS TO WILLIAMSBURG INTL. THAT SHOWED 6 MI. WAS TOLD TO DSND TO 3000 FT AND MAINTAIN. I REPLIED THAT I WOULD NOT DSND AND NEEDED ALL THE ALT I COULD GET. I WAS TOLD TO EXPECT BACK COURSE RWY 25. I TOLD THE CTLR I DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO SET UP FOR THAT. I WAS GIVEN A CONTACT APCH TO RWY 25. LNDG WAS GOOD AND THE FIRE DEPT TOOK A RPT WHEN THEY MET US. THE FAA HAD CALLED THE FBO ASKING WHAT HAPPENED. THEY WERE TOLD I WAS VERY WELL PLEASED WITH ATC RESPONSE.
