Narrative:
This was pilot error, for not ensuring that there was enough fuel for flight. I had checked the level prior to giving my first son a ride. When I returned, the next son wanted to go. And when my third son wanted to go, I should have thought of fuel, but didn't. The avids have a small site gauge that is not in a normal 'scan' area. I think I will build a panel mount gauge now for added safety. We ran dry at 2000 ft and picked one of several farms to land without event. I added 5 gallons of gas and departed without trouble and flew the 3.45 mi home to LL10.
