Narrative:
Scheduled flight stl to phx at approximately XA00 local was cleared by tower for visual approach runway 26R phx. Approximately 8 NM out on final approach at 2500 AGL, TCASII alert to descend was announced. First officer was flying and initiated a descent. I was alerted to intruder at 8:30 O'clock position. I checked and acquired visual contact with intruder who was belly-up on collision course. I took control of the aircraft and initiated an aggressive right turn and climb away from the intruder. The intruder had crossed both runway 26L and runway 26R final approachs in an overshoot. In my opinion, the TCASII warning was a major factor in avoiding a midair collision.

Title: NMAC BTWN AN UNKNOWN ACFT AND AN AIRLINE MLG ON AN 8 MI VISUAL APCH TO PHX. ACR WAS ON TWR FREQ. RPTR GIVES CREDIT FOR 'SAVE' TO TCASII. NO TA.
Narrative: SCHEDULED FLT STL TO PHX AT APPROX XA00 LCL WAS CLRED BY TWR FOR VISUAL APCH RWY 26R PHX. APPROX 8 NM OUT ON FINAL APCH AT 2500 AGL, TCASII ALERT TO DSND WAS ANNOUNCED. FO WAS FLYING AND INITIATED A DSCNT. I WAS ALERTED TO INTRUDER AT 8:30 O'CLOCK POS. I CHKED AND ACQUIRED VISUAL CONTACT WITH INTRUDER WHO WAS BELLY-UP ON COLLISION COURSE. I TOOK CTL OF THE ACFT AND INITIATED AN AGGRESSIVE R TURN AND CLB AWAY FROM THE INTRUDER. THE INTRUDER HAD CROSSED BOTH RWY 26L AND RWY 26R FINAL APCHS IN AN OVERSHOOT. IN MY OPINION, THE TCASII WARNING WAS A MAJOR FACTOR IN AVOIDING A MIDAIR COLLISION.
