Narrative:
On taxi in at dfw. We landed runway 17L. Taxied across er bridge to hold short on runway 17C. Received clearance to cross runway 17C north on taxiway M to hold short runway 17R at taxiway B. As we taxied north on taxiway M, we received clearance, 'make good time to taxiway B, cross runway 17R, contact ground .65.' while we were receiving this clearance, my attention was drawn to an MD80 clearing runway 17C at M6 and about to be head-to-head with me! I thought the tower controller had cleared us all the way to parking, and as we tried to contact ground I noticed that the frequency was very busy and there were no aircraft around us. This reconfirmed to me that we were cleared to park. We taxied the 300 ft to our park completely without incident and the first officer informed me that we had never received the clearance to parking. I should have reconfirmed the clearance with the first officer, however, I feel if a separate person was working arrival ground on 121.8 the first officer could have called ground and gotten the clearance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR FLC IN AN LTT TAXIED ONTO THEIR RAMP AND PARKED WITHOUT A CLRNC TO DO SO. THE CAPT, APPARENTLY, ASSUMED THAT THIS ACTION WAS EXPECTED.
Narrative: ON TAXI IN AT DFW. WE LANDED RWY 17L. TAXIED ACROSS ER BRIDGE TO HOLD SHORT ON RWY 17C. RECEIVED CLRNC TO CROSS RWY 17C N ON TXWY M TO HOLD SHORT RWY 17R AT TXWY B. AS WE TAXIED N ON TXWY M, WE RECEIVED CLRNC, 'MAKE GOOD TIME TO TXWY B, CROSS RWY 17R, CONTACT GND .65.' WHILE WE WERE RECEIVING THIS CLRNC, MY ATTN WAS DRAWN TO AN MD80 CLRING RWY 17C AT M6 AND ABOUT TO BE HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH ME! I THOUGHT THE TWR CTLR HAD CLRED US ALL THE WAY TO PARKING, AND AS WE TRIED TO CONTACT GND I NOTICED THAT THE FREQ WAS VERY BUSY AND THERE WERE NO ACFT AROUND US. THIS RECONFIRMED TO ME THAT WE WERE CLRED TO PARK. WE TAXIED THE 300 FT TO OUR PARK COMPLETELY WITHOUT INCIDENT AND THE FO INFORMED ME THAT WE HAD NEVER RECEIVED THE CLRNC TO PARKING. I SHOULD HAVE RECONFIRMED THE CLRNC WITH THE FO, HOWEVER, I FEEL IF A SEPARATE PERSON WAS WORKING ARR GND ON 121.8 THE FO COULD HAVE CALLED GND AND GOTTEN THE CLRNC.
