Narrative:
I inadvertently accepted a clearance to FL240 that was given to another aircraft. I read back the clearance, but evidently was stepped on. The controller said it was for another aircraft. A few thousand ft later the controller asked if we had accepted the descent for another aircraft. (I have that question.) he told us to continue the descent to FL240 at that time. The captain said he heard someone was wrong on the descent, but thought it was the other aircraft. Obviously, we should have been a little more thorough in verifying that it was our flight cleared to descend. Supplemental information from acn 380050: controller was blocked when they tried to correct the error. Evidently, we both confused the call sign and began the descent. Lots of radio chatter.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR MD80 FLC COMPLIED WITH ANOTHER ACR'S CLRNC. THEIR READBACK WAS BLOCKED AND AFTER BEING QUESTIONED BY THE CTLR THEY WERE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE THEIR DSCNT. NO CONFLICT.
Narrative: I INADVERTENTLY ACCEPTED A CLRNC TO FL240 THAT WAS GIVEN TO ANOTHER ACFT. I READ BACK THE CLRNC, BUT EVIDENTLY WAS STEPPED ON. THE CTLR SAID IT WAS FOR ANOTHER ACFT. A FEW THOUSAND FT LATER THE CTLR ASKED IF WE HAD ACCEPTED THE DSCNT FOR ANOTHER ACFT. (I HAVE THAT QUESTION.) HE TOLD US TO CONTINUE THE DSCNT TO FL240 AT THAT TIME. THE CAPT SAID HE HEARD SOMEONE WAS WRONG ON THE DSCNT, BUT THOUGHT IT WAS THE OTHER ACFT. OBVIOUSLY, WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A LITTLE MORE THOROUGH IN VERIFYING THAT IT WAS OUR FLT CLRED TO DSND. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 380050: CTLR WAS BLOCKED WHEN THEY TRIED TO CORRECT THE ERROR. EVIDENTLY, WE BOTH CONFUSED THE CALL SIGN AND BEGAN THE DSCNT. LOTS OF RADIO CHATTER.
