Narrative:

Told to expect visual approach. I requested approach from ponde. I thought I was cleared for approach. Controller asked for altitude and I reported descending to 800 ft (MDA). He stated I hadn't been cleared to descend. I climbed back to 1600 ft and reported field in sight. Confusion with what I requested (VOR from ponde intersection) and what controllers thought I was flying (visual approach). VFR WX. No conflict with other traffic.

Title: CPR AC69 PIC DSNDS TO MDA ON VOR APCH BEFORE HE WAS CLRED FOR AN APCH. THE APCH CTLR HAD ADVISED HIM TO EXPECT A VISUAL APCH. RPT DOES NOT DEFINE THE TERMINOLOGY THAT LED THE RPTR DOWN THE WRONG PATH.

Narrative: TOLD TO EXPECT VISUAL APCH. I REQUESTED APCH FROM PONDE. I THOUGHT I WAS CLRED FOR APCH. CTLR ASKED FOR ALT AND I RPTED DSNDING TO 800 FT (MDA). HE STATED I HADN'T BEEN CLRED TO DSND. I CLBED BACK TO 1600 FT AND RPTED FIELD IN SIGHT. CONFUSION WITH WHAT I REQUESTED (VOR FROM PONDE INTXN) AND WHAT CTLRS THOUGHT I WAS FLYING (VISUAL APCH). VFR WX. NO CONFLICT WITH OTHER TFC.
