Narrative:
Climbing to assigned altitude of 12000 ft, PIC as PF. Passing about 11300 ft, departure/cmh asked what altitude we were climbing to and may have said 'going to 12000 ft?' in a question. He then asked what we were assigned. We checked with each other to be certain and replied '12000 ft assigned,' which was also on the autoplt altitude pre-select. He said we should be at 10000 ft and told us to descend to 10000 ft. We complied. ATC again asked if we were assigned 10000 ft and when we responded 12000 ft, he said 'someone made a mistake.' our ATC clearance for the short flight had been '5000 ft expect 10000 ft.' however, when cleared to 12000 ft during climb out, did not think that unusual since 12000 ft is the norm for jet arrs on that STAR into cvg.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A CL65 ACR FLC CLBED ABOVE 10000 FT TOWARD THEIR ASSIGNED ALT OF 12000 FT WHEN THE DEP CTLR ASKED THEM ABOUT THEIR ALT. THE FLC THOUGHT THAT THEY HAD BEEN ASSIGNED 12000 FT AND THE DEP CTLR THOUGHT THAT 10000 FT WAS THE CORRECT ALT. THEY DSNDED TO 10000 FT AT THE CTLR'S REQUEST.
Narrative: CLBING TO ASSIGNED ALT OF 12000 FT, PIC AS PF. PASSING ABOUT 11300 FT, DEP/CMH ASKED WHAT ALT WE WERE CLBING TO AND MAY HAVE SAID 'GOING TO 12000 FT?' IN A QUESTION. HE THEN ASKED WHAT WE WERE ASSIGNED. WE CHKED WITH EACH OTHER TO BE CERTAIN AND REPLIED '12000 FT ASSIGNED,' WHICH WAS ALSO ON THE AUTOPLT ALT PRE-SELECT. HE SAID WE SHOULD BE AT 10000 FT AND TOLD US TO DSND TO 10000 FT. WE COMPLIED. ATC AGAIN ASKED IF WE WERE ASSIGNED 10000 FT AND WHEN WE RESPONDED 12000 FT, HE SAID 'SOMEONE MADE A MISTAKE.' OUR ATC CLRNC FOR THE SHORT FLT HAD BEEN '5000 FT EXPECT 10000 FT.' HOWEVER, WHEN CLRED TO 12000 FT DURING CLBOUT, DID NOT THINK THAT UNUSUAL SINCE 12000 FT IS THE NORM FOR JET ARRS ON THAT STAR INTO CVG.
