Narrative:
ATIS reported excellent WX (4000 ft plus ceilings, visibility 10+ mi). During approach, WX deteriorated rapidly with squalls (fast moving in area). Moderate to heavy rain on approach with +/-20 KT wind shears from OM on glide path. Tower reported no significant WX. Tower reported helicopter on approach to airfield which was to remain east of airfield final approach. TCASII depicted traffic which seemed to drift towards our final approach. We were on course and glide path. At approximately 2 1/2 - 3 NM between 700-1000 ft. TCASII depicted traffic nearly superimposed on our aircraft symbol (solid red square with -2 (200 ft below). TCASII issued audible resolution alert (RA). I had to break off approach and climb. Once clear of traffic we broke out of WX, saw airport and landed visually. Filed near midair collision report with boeing tower.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737-200 ACFT ON APCH IN DETERIORATING WX HAD INTRUDER HELI ENCROACH ON APCH PATH RESULTING IN TCASII RA AND EVASIVE ACTION.
Narrative: ATIS RPTED EXCELLENT WX (4000 FT PLUS CEILINGS, VISIBILITY 10+ MI). DURING APCH, WX DETERIORATED RAPIDLY WITH SQUALLS (FAST MOVING IN AREA). MODERATE TO HVY RAIN ON APCH WITH +/-20 KT WIND SHEARS FROM OM ON GLIDE PATH. TWR RPTED NO SIGNIFICANT WX. TWR RPTED HELI ON APCH TO AIRFIELD WHICH WAS TO REMAIN E OF AIRFIELD FINAL APCH. TCASII DEPICTED TFC WHICH SEEMED TO DRIFT TOWARDS OUR FINAL APCH. WE WERE ON COURSE AND GLIDE PATH. AT APPROX 2 1/2 - 3 NM BTWN 700-1000 FT. TCASII DEPICTED TFC NEARLY SUPERIMPOSED ON OUR ACFT SYMBOL (SOLID RED SQUARE WITH -2 (200 FT BELOW). TCASII ISSUED AUDIBLE RESOLUTION ALERT (RA). I HAD TO BREAK OFF APCH AND CLB. ONCE CLR OF TFC WE BROKE OUT OF WX, SAW ARPT AND LANDED VISUALLY. FILED NMAC RPT WITH BOEING TWR.
