Narrative:
My aircraft, nxx, was IFR level at 4000 ft, just handed off from atl approach to ZTL. We were with the center for approximately 3 mins when my copilot pushed down on the control wheel and moaned. I looked at him then looked left to see a gray cardinal or C182RG pass at approximately 15 ft off our left side and just over our tail. The other aircraft appeared to be in a slight left turn. I have been flying since 1969. That is the closest I have ever come to being hit by another aircraft. ZTL said they didn't see the other aircraft because of the 'limited radar coverage in that area.' (36 mi north of atlanta at 4000 ft.) supplemental information from acn 383084: I made an evasive maneuver to miss a C210 over the cartersville airport. The C210 aircraft was heading northbound at 4000 ft MSL. ZTL was notified of the situation, their response was the radar coverage in that area was minimal. An uneventful landing was accomplished at rmg, GA.
