Narrative:
Crossed positive control area VOR at 14000 ft, lunas 1, for runway 23L. On 150 degree radial from positive control area, then direct otu VOR, got descend to 12000 ft from mex approach. Approximately XA05 UTC, hit a thunderstorm with heavy precipitation accompanied by the smell of electrical smoke. Then ground proximity warning sounded, 'terrain, terrain.' captain initiated escape maneuver. He climbed to 15500 ft and called ATC, no conflict and no conflict on the TCASII either. At 15500 ft terrain warning stopped, we cleared the thunderstorm, regained VMC conditions, descended to 12000 ft and continued the approach for runway 23L with a transition to runway 23R. Warning and smell of electrical smoke entered in E6.

Title: AN ACR B757 FLC ENCOUNTERED A TSTM DURING A STAR TO MEX. THEY HAD HVY PRECIPITATION AND A GPWS TERRAIN WARNING ACCOMPANIED BY A SMELL OF ELECTRICAL SMOKE. THE FLC PERFORMED AN ESCAPE MANEUVER RECOVERED AND CONTINUED FOR A SUCCESSFUL LNDG.
Narrative: CROSSED PCA VOR AT 14000 FT, LUNAS 1, FOR RWY 23L. ON 150 DEG RADIAL FROM PCA, THEN DIRECT OTU VOR, GOT DSND TO 12000 FT FROM MEX APCH. APPROX XA05 UTC, HIT A TSTM WITH HVY PRECIPITATION ACCOMPANIED BY THE SMELL OF ELECTRICAL SMOKE. THEN GND PROX WARNING SOUNDED, 'TERRAIN, TERRAIN.' CAPT INITIATED ESCAPE MANEUVER. HE CLBED TO 15500 FT AND CALLED ATC, NO CONFLICT AND NO CONFLICT ON THE TCASII EITHER. AT 15500 FT TERRAIN WARNING STOPPED, WE CLRED THE TSTM, REGAINED VMC CONDITIONS, DSNDED TO 12000 FT AND CONTINUED THE APCH FOR RWY 23L WITH A TRANSITION TO RWY 23R. WARNING AND SMELL OF ELECTRICAL SMOKE ENTERED IN E6.
