Narrative:
I flight planned from rfd to yip for 15000 ft on an IFR flight plan reversing the course I had received on the way up there. There were no forecast ATC delays or bad WX conditions. I had planned for a 1 hour and 15 min time en route with a 45 min reserve. Once airborne we were given an unexpected routing which increased our time en route. The low fuel lights on both tanks came on about 8 mins from the field (yip). (This means we have 15 mins left in the tanks.) detroit had us on a vector away from the field for other traffic. Pending any other delays I decided to declare minimum fuel and we were cleared direct. No other problems resulted. Next time I am dealing with navigating chicago airspace I will definitely carry a few extra hundred pounds -- at least 30 extra mins of fuel.
