Narrative:
Departing runway 31L at williams-gateway airport, I was instructed by tower to climb straight ahead for 3 mi and contact phx approach on 120.7. I complied with instructions but approach had difficulty picking up my transponder. I turned west (actually 220 degrees) and, using my GPS, I skirted the wsw edge of the class B airspace. I leveled off at 8500 ft MSL and shortly thereafter approach control got radar contact and said I was in class B airspace without permission. My GPS still showed me approximately 1 mi outside class B. Approach did not say how far inside I was nor made any other comments except to direct my flight to las vegas, nv. The radio traffic was heavy so I did not inquire about the incident at that time. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: pilot was called to see what the nanchang CJ6 aircraft is. Reply is, it's made in china, 2 place trainer with a 9 cylinder reciprocating engine. Gross weight is around 3000 pounds.
