Narrative:

Tower controllers on position should not talk to people getting a tower tour. While working a C172 in the left hand traffic pattern to runway 13, I cleared the beech 1900 commuter for takeoff runway 8. Both pilots saw each other in time to take evasive action but it shouldn't have happened. I work this same situation several times a month and normally I will give the runway 13 traffic right traffic to avoid runway 8 departures. Normally I'm paying 200% attention to the job, 80% is unsafe, unacceptable. Glad the pilots had their heads out of the cockpits scanning the skies. And I'll never talk to tower visitors when on position again.
