Narrative:
Departure from birmingham airport, 8000 ft, 5 mi northwest vulcan VOR. TCASII TA, no altitude information from conflicting aircraft. With no altitude information we attempted to visually acquire aircraft with no success. Turned away from the aircraft's flight path to avoid a potential collision. During the turn with our attention 'outside' the aircraft looking for the conflicting aircraft we climbed approximately 300 ft to 8300 ft MSL. Birmingham departure then directed a left turn to 270 degrees. We then advised departure of our TCASII advisory and our response. The entire sequence lasted maybe 60 seconds. Birmingham departure then advised us we were assigned 8000 ft, conflicting traffic was at 9000 ft. We were then directed to call a supervisor on such and such number. The supervisor said 'no problem,' we never showed you off altitude, but he was concerned about the TCASII advisory. Supplemental information from acn 383910: conflict aircraft should have had altitude encode turned on.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF B737 HAS TCASII TA SHORTLY AFTER DEP. WITH BOTH PLTS LOOKING FOR THE TFC THEY CLB 300 FT ABOVE ASSIGNED ALT. THEY MADE A TURN FOR AVOIDANCE AFTER WHICH ATC GIVES A VECTOR.
Narrative: DEP FROM BIRMINGHAM ARPT, 8000 FT, 5 MI NW VULCAN VOR. TCASII TA, NO ALT INFO FROM CONFLICTING ACFT. WITH NO ALT INFO WE ATTEMPTED TO VISUALLY ACQUIRE ACFT WITH NO SUCCESS. TURNED AWAY FROM THE ACFT'S FLT PATH TO AVOID A POTENTIAL COLLISION. DURING THE TURN WITH OUR ATTN 'OUTSIDE' THE ACFT LOOKING FOR THE CONFLICTING ACFT WE CLBED APPROX 300 FT TO 8300 FT MSL. BIRMINGHAM DEP THEN DIRECTED A L TURN TO 270 DEGS. WE THEN ADVISED DEP OF OUR TCASII ADVISORY AND OUR RESPONSE. THE ENTIRE SEQUENCE LASTED MAYBE 60 SECONDS. BIRMINGHAM DEP THEN ADVISED US WE WERE ASSIGNED 8000 FT, CONFLICTING TFC WAS AT 9000 FT. WE WERE THEN DIRECTED TO CALL A SUPVR ON SUCH AND SUCH NUMBER. THE SUPVR SAID 'NO PROB,' WE NEVER SHOWED YOU OFF ALT, BUT HE WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE TCASII ADVISORY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 383910: CONFLICT ACFT SHOULD HAVE HAD ALT ENCODE TURNED ON.
