Narrative:
Just passing gfs VOR on oasis departure from las. Climbing to assigned FL230. In right turn to hec, flying using autoplt FMS navigation on GPS with VOR backup. New clearance was given to maintain FL220 and new route given to fly after gfs direct pmd sadde 7 arrival lax. Altitude was selected on FMS and armed. Captain started programming new route in GPS. I completed turn, selected pmd on VOR, and took out commercial charts to look for sadde 6 arrival lax when engineer called out altitude. Approximately 2 seconds later, center advised us to descend to FL220. Altitude alert prior to new assigned altitude was not heard by this pilot.
