Narrative:

Aircraft departed mmu on IFR flight plan for jfk on published SID. Was under ATC control, radar vectors and instructed to level off at 5000 ft MSL. We were busy complying with ATC instructions and in constant moderate turbulence. Aircraft was being flown manually, altitude preselect was in use. I noticed that during a turn that we were climbing through 5000 ft (altitude assigned) and was attempting to recover approximately 350- 400 ft altitude excursion. ATC questioned altitude assigned (5000 ft). Recovery was made to assigned altitude utilizing normal techniques and considering passenger comfort, under VMC conditions. Aircraft was returned to assigned altitude, under VMC conditions with no conflicts and without further incident or concern by ATC. I stressed the crew resource management and situational awareness with the sic. Departure is the busiest time of flight and requires complete diligence by all crew.
