Narrative:
We were cleared to hold as published at btg. I looked at the olm 2 arrival but mistakenly looked at olm, where the published hold is left turns. The captain looked on the high chart, saw btg holding as right turns. I asked the captain to resolve the l-r discrepancy with ATC, and we were again told to hold as published on the olm 2 arrival. I still had not caught my own error, so we entered the hold and turned left. The controller noted our left turn, said to us that we were supposed to turn right. He then cleared us back to btg and cleared us for the olm 2 arrival. He said nothing further. The lesson was: pay attention to details and always keep up vigilance. Go as far as is necessary to resolve a discrepancy. I should have suspected something in error since the pattern on the high chart and the pattern on the arrival (at the wrong fix) were in disagreement.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A B747-400 STARTED TURNING THE WRONG WAY IN A HIGH ALT ARR HOLDING PATTERN WHICH WAS CAUGHT BY ATC WHO INTERVENED AND DIRECTED THE RPTRS BACK TO THE INITIAL HOLDING FIX.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED TO HOLD AS PUBLISHED AT BTG. I LOOKED AT THE OLM 2 ARR BUT MISTAKENLY LOOKED AT OLM, WHERE THE PUBLISHED HOLD IS L TURNS. THE CAPT LOOKED ON THE HIGH CHART, SAW BTG HOLDING AS R TURNS. I ASKED THE CAPT TO RESOLVE THE L-R DISCREPANCY WITH ATC, AND WE WERE AGAIN TOLD TO HOLD AS PUBLISHED ON THE OLM 2 ARR. I STILL HAD NOT CAUGHT MY OWN ERROR, SO WE ENTERED THE HOLD AND TURNED L. THE CTLR NOTED OUR L TURN, SAID TO US THAT WE WERE SUPPOSED TO TURN R. HE THEN CLRED US BACK TO BTG AND CLRED US FOR THE OLM 2 ARR. HE SAID NOTHING FURTHER. THE LESSON WAS: PAY ATTN TO DETAILS AND ALWAYS KEEP UP VIGILANCE. GO AS FAR AS IS NECESSARY TO RESOLVE A DISCREPANCY. I SHOULD HAVE SUSPECTED SOMETHING IN ERROR SINCE THE PATTERN ON THE HIGH CHART AND THE PATTERN ON THE ARR (AT THE WRONG FIX) WERE IN DISAGREEMENT.
