Narrative:
Departed stl to uin, IMC. Autoplt captured and held 6000 ft MSL. I was distracted by a non flying passenger in the right seat. Stl departure called to verify my altitude, they showed me high. This autoplt has a history of not trimming correctly and then deviating from its altitude, and I knew this. The aircraft had climbed to 6600 ft MSL before I hand flew it back to 6000 ft. I communicated with stl departure, that we had deviated from our assigned altitude and now we were re-established at 6000 ft. I should have paid more attention during the entire leveloff, not just, that the autoplt had captured and began the leveling process.
