Narrative:
As a first officer and PF, I responded to an RA on our TCASII (flight oakland to santa ana). Socal approach pointed out traffic at our 1 O'clock position moving right to left 500 ft below our altitude. The traffic was apparent on our TCASII, but not visually sighted. When the RA activated, I followed the climb command to 5200 ft. The captain sighted the traffic after it passed to our left. I descended to 5000 ft after the TCASII announced 'clear of conflict.' our airline's policy is to follow RA's in all cases except when it is deemed unsafe to do so. In a phone conversation with socal, the ATC supervisor stated IFR separation was violated with an aircraft 1000 ft (6000 ft MSL) above our flight level.

Title: B737-400 ACFT IN CRUISE HAD TCASII RA AND FOLLOWED THE RA BY CLBING 200 FT UNTIL 'CLR OF CONFLICT.' POSTFLT CONVERSATION WITH ATC SUPVR INDICATED SEPARATION WAS VIOLATED WITH ANOTHER ACFT.
Narrative: AS A FO AND PF, I RESPONDED TO AN RA ON OUR TCASII (FLT OAKLAND TO SANTA ANA). SOCAL APCH POINTED OUT TFC AT OUR 1 O'CLOCK POS MOVING R TO L 500 FT BELOW OUR ALT. THE TFC WAS APPARENT ON OUR TCASII, BUT NOT VISUALLY SIGHTED. WHEN THE RA ACTIVATED, I FOLLOWED THE CLB COMMAND TO 5200 FT. THE CAPT SIGHTED THE TFC AFTER IT PASSED TO OUR L. I DSNDED TO 5000 FT AFTER THE TCASII ANNOUNCED 'CLR OF CONFLICT.' OUR AIRLINE'S POLICY IS TO FOLLOW RA'S IN ALL CASES EXCEPT WHEN IT IS DEEMED UNSAFE TO DO SO. IN A PHONE CONVERSATION WITH SOCAL, THE ATC SUPVR STATED IFR SEPARATION WAS VIOLATED WITH AN ACFT 1000 FT (6000 FT MSL) ABOVE OUR FLT LEVEL.
