Narrative:
We were operating as air carrier X flight abc from stl-bpk. We were on a vector shortly after takeoff and were instructed to climb from 3000 ft to 4000 ft. I was the PNF (first officer). I dialed in 4000 ft on the altitude alerter and then started to read the climb checklist. Our company policy requires this to be accomplished sometime after 1500 ft AGL. Unfortunately, because I was doing this, I missed the '200 ft to go' callout as we climbed through 3800 ft. I was just finishing the checklist when the captain noticed he had climbed through and above 4000 ft. He immediately returned to 4000 ft with no further incident. In the future I will try to wait a little longer to do the climb checklist during a less busy phase of climb.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A SWEARINGEN SA227AC METRO III (FA22) OVERSHOT ALT ON CLB DUE TO THE PF NOT GIVEN A 200 FT WARNING BY THE PNF. THE CAPT NOTICED HIS MISTAKE AND CORRECTED BACK AT ONCE WITH NO ATC INVOLVEMENT.
Narrative: WE WERE OPERATING AS ACR X FLT ABC FROM STL-BPK. WE WERE ON A VECTOR SHORTLY AFTER TKOF AND WERE INSTRUCTED TO CLB FROM 3000 FT TO 4000 FT. I WAS THE PNF (FO). I DIALED IN 4000 FT ON THE ALT ALERTER AND THEN STARTED TO READ THE CLB CHKLIST. OUR COMPANY POLICY REQUIRES THIS TO BE ACCOMPLISHED SOMETIME AFTER 1500 FT AGL. UNFORTUNATELY, BECAUSE I WAS DOING THIS, I MISSED THE '200 FT TO GO' CALLOUT AS WE CLBED THROUGH 3800 FT. I WAS JUST FINISHING THE CHKLIST WHEN THE CAPT NOTICED HE HAD CLBED THROUGH AND ABOVE 4000 FT. HE IMMEDIATELY RETURNED TO 4000 FT WITH NO FURTHER INCIDENT. IN THE FUTURE I WILL TRY TO WAIT A LITTLE LONGER TO DO THE CLB CHKLIST DURING A LESS BUSY PHASE OF CLB.
