Narrative:
While climbing through approximately FL230, the left engine appeared to compressor stall. 1 loud band was heard. The engine indicated approximately 1/2 of the original climb power setting with high egt. Autothrottles were disconnected and left engine was brought to idle, with normal idle indications. The first officer reviewed the operations manual. A leveloff was requested and received. Flight continued to atl with left engine at idle. An emergency was declared, flight landed without incident. After landing, communications became a problem. Ground control, flight attendants and flight control called at approximately the same time. Left engine was shut down after landing. On postflt, we discovered that part(south) of left engine had fallen off aircraft while in-flight. Supplemental information from acn 388838: once on the ground, captain made a wrong turn onto a taxiway because of communication overload relating to engine shutdown after landing. Engine was destroyed even though would still idle.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MD88 ACFT IN CRUISE HAD COMPRESSOR STALL IN R ENG. FLC SET IDLE PWR AND INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL, SO ENG WAS LEFT RUNNING IN IDLE. AFTER LNDG IT WAS SHUT DOWN AND FLC HAD SOME DIFFICULTY WITH TAXI INSTRUCTIONS DUE TO MANY DISTRS.
Narrative: WHILE CLBING THROUGH APPROX FL230, THE L ENG APPEARED TO COMPRESSOR STALL. 1 LOUD BAND WAS HEARD. THE ENG INDICATED APPROX 1/2 OF THE ORIGINAL CLB PWR SETTING WITH HIGH EGT. AUTOTHROTTLES WERE DISCONNECTED AND L ENG WAS BROUGHT TO IDLE, WITH NORMAL IDLE INDICATIONS. THE FO REVIEWED THE OPS MANUAL. A LEVELOFF WAS REQUESTED AND RECEIVED. FLT CONTINUED TO ATL WITH L ENG AT IDLE. AN EMER WAS DECLARED, FLT LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. AFTER LNDG, COMS BECAME A PROB. GND CTL, FLT ATTENDANTS AND FLT CTL CALLED AT APPROX THE SAME TIME. L ENG WAS SHUT DOWN AFTER LNDG. ON POSTFLT, WE DISCOVERED THAT PART(S) OF L ENG HAD FALLEN OFF ACFT WHILE INFLT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 388838: ONCE ON THE GND, CAPT MADE A WRONG TURN ONTO A TXWY BECAUSE OF COM OVERLOAD RELATING TO ENG SHUTDOWN AFTER LNDG. ENG WAS DESTROYED EVEN THOUGH WOULD STILL IDLE.
