Narrative:
On dec/xa/97, en route ymx to mem, advised approximately 45 mins - 1 hour after departure by ZOB that ymx ground had found a panel on the runway but that they were not sure if it was off our aircraft or the previous departing aircraft. Once we were on the ground in mem, we debriefed our maintenance and did a postflt inspection with a mechanic and did not see anything unusual missing from the aircraft. Advised later that day that a panel had fallen off onto the runway at ymx. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter first officer later learned that the panel had indeed come from their aircraft, but they and the mechanic looking over the aircraft after landing had not found its location -- high in the left main wheel well. Reporter speculates that the reason it came off was due to improper securing of the access panel during routine maintenance.

ADVISED LATER THAT DAY THAT A PANEL HAD FALLEN OFF ONTO THE RWY AT YMX. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR FO LATER LEARNED THAT THE PANEL HAD INDEED COME FROM THEIR ACFT, BUT THEY AND THE MECH LOOKING OVER THE ACFT AFTER LNDG HAD NOT FOUND ITS LOCATION -- HIGH IN THE L MAIN WHEEL WELL.
