Narrative:
After completing the before taxi checklist we initiated a right turn. As we made the turn the left generator came off line followed shortly by a 'left oil' caption. At this time smoke was noticed coming out of the left engine. The left engine was shut down and then we made the decision to evacuate/evacuation the aircraft. The right engine was shut down and the flight attendant notified to prepare for evacuate/evacuation. The passenger exited through the main passenger door after the first officer evaluated it for safety. No emergency was declared, there was no fire and nobody was injured. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated that this was a jetstream 4100. The generator drive seal failed, releasing engine oil onto the hot parts of the generator. Because of this seal failure the engine also lost its oil, thus the warning light, creating the need for the engine shutdown.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR LTT IS EVACED JUST AS IT LEAVES THE ACR RAMP BECAUSE THE L ENG WAS PRODUCING SMOKE. JUST PRIOR TO THIS THE L ENG GENERATOR HAD FAILED, FOLLOWED BY A CAPTURE OF 'L OIL.' NO PROBS WITH THE EVAC.
Narrative: AFTER COMPLETING THE BEFORE TAXI CHKLIST WE INITIATED A R TURN. AS WE MADE THE TURN THE L GENERATOR CAME OFF LINE FOLLOWED SHORTLY BY A 'L OIL' CAPTION. AT THIS TIME SMOKE WAS NOTICED COMING OUT OF THE L ENG. THE L ENG WAS SHUT DOWN AND THEN WE MADE THE DECISION TO EVAC THE ACFT. THE R ENG WAS SHUT DOWN AND THE FLT ATTENDANT NOTIFIED TO PREPARE FOR EVAC. THE PAX EXITED THROUGH THE MAIN PAX DOOR AFTER THE FO EVALUATED IT FOR SAFETY. NO EMER WAS DECLARED, THERE WAS NO FIRE AND NOBODY WAS INJURED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATED THAT THIS WAS A JETSTREAM 4100. THE GENERATOR DRIVE SEAL FAILED, RELEASING ENG OIL ONTO THE HOT PARTS OF THE GENERATOR. BECAUSE OF THIS SEAL FAILURE THE ENG ALSO LOST ITS OIL, THUS THE WARNING LIGHT, CREATING THE NEED FOR THE ENG SHUTDOWN.
