Narrative:
Inbound to dfw we were given holding instructions at kajay with an efc of XX40. We were still outbound on our first turn in holding when we were issued a left turn heading 020 degrees. I acknowledged the turn and we began the left turn. Rolling through about 160 degrees the controller asked if we had started our turn. I answered affirmative we're in a left turn to 020 degrees. ATC then issued an immediate right turn and descent to FL290. (We were at FL310.) immediately we complied with the instructions. When we were initially given the left turn I thought it was odd to be going the long way around. I didn't confirm the direction of the turn and I should have. Maybe I heard something different than what the controller said or maybe he actually instructed us to make a left turn when he meant a right turn. Next time I hear something I think is odd I will get a clarification.

Title: FLC OF A SUPER MD80 TURNED THE WRONG DIRECTION WHEN INSTRUCTED TO MAKE A TURN DURING HOLDING RESULTING IN ATC INTERVENTION AND AMENDED INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAINTAINING STANDARD SEPARATION WITH OTHER TFC.
Narrative: INBOUND TO DFW WE WERE GIVEN HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS AT KAJAY WITH AN EFC OF XX40. WE WERE STILL OUTBOUND ON OUR FIRST TURN IN HOLDING WHEN WE WERE ISSUED A L TURN HDG 020 DEGS. I ACKNOWLEDGED THE TURN AND WE BEGAN THE L TURN. ROLLING THROUGH ABOUT 160 DEGS THE CTLR ASKED IF WE HAD STARTED OUR TURN. I ANSWERED AFFIRMATIVE WE'RE IN A L TURN TO 020 DEGS. ATC THEN ISSUED AN IMMEDIATE R TURN AND DSCNT TO FL290. (WE WERE AT FL310.) IMMEDIATELY WE COMPLIED WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS. WHEN WE WERE INITIALLY GIVEN THE L TURN I THOUGHT IT WAS ODD TO BE GOING THE LONG WAY AROUND. I DIDN'T CONFIRM THE DIRECTION OF THE TURN AND I SHOULD HAVE. MAYBE I HEARD SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN WHAT THE CTLR SAID OR MAYBE HE ACTUALLY INSTRUCTED US TO MAKE A L TURN WHEN HE MEANT A R TURN. NEXT TIME I HEAR SOMETHING I THINK IS ODD I WILL GET A CLARIFICATION.
