Narrative:
We were cleared to taxi from our gate to runway 31R des moines. As we taxied out the captain elected to use taxiway B to intercept taxiway D. As we approached taxiway D, the captain started a right turn (northbound) on taxiway D towards runway 13L. I challenged his decision and told him to turn left (sbound) on taxiway D. He seemed disoriented, and repeated his decision to turn right. At this time the ground controller told us to turn left on taxiway D. Our plane was facing northwest on taxiway D at B/D intersection when the captain started an abrupt and sharp turn to the left to proceed sbound on taxiway D. The nosewheel left the taxiway pavement and sank into the mud on the southwest corner of B/D intersection. Supplemental information from acn 390490: all further aircraft movement stopped. No injuries. Only aircraft damage was nose gear mud deflector.

Title: CAPT OF AN MD83 TURNED THE WRONG WAY DURING TAXI TO THE RWY RESULTING IN THE NOSEWHEEL GOING OFF THE TXWY AND GETTING STUCK IN THE MUD WHEN REVERSING DIRECTIONS AT THE SUGGESTION OF THE TWR CTLR. THE ACFT BECAME STRANDED AND THERE WAS MINOR DAMAGE TO THE WHEEL MUD DEFLECTOR.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI FROM OUR GATE TO RWY 31R DES MOINES. AS WE TAXIED OUT THE CAPT ELECTED TO USE TXWY B TO INTERCEPT TXWY D. AS WE APCHED TXWY D, THE CAPT STARTED A R TURN (NBOUND) ON TXWY D TOWARDS RWY 13L. I CHALLENGED HIS DECISION AND TOLD HIM TO TURN L (SBOUND) ON TXWY D. HE SEEMED DISORIENTED, AND REPEATED HIS DECISION TO TURN R. AT THIS TIME THE GND CTLR TOLD US TO TURN L ON TXWY D. OUR PLANE WAS FACING NW ON TXWY D AT B/D INTXN WHEN THE CAPT STARTED AN ABRUPT AND SHARP TURN TO THE L TO PROCEED SBOUND ON TXWY D. THE NOSEWHEEL LEFT THE TXWY PAVEMENT AND SANK INTO THE MUD ON THE SW CORNER OF B/D INTXN. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 390490: ALL FURTHER ACFT MOVEMENT STOPPED. NO INJURIES. ONLY ACFT DAMAGE WAS NOSE GEAR MUD DEFLECTOR.
