Narrative:
Cleared by ZOB to cross 70 mi east of pmm VOR at FL240. Passing FL265 controller said assigned altitude was FL280, climb and maintain FL280. First officer and I both heard clearance to FL240 and did the standard first officer set altitude and I confirmed it before we started descent. Nothing was mentioned about any conflict with other traffic.
