Narrative:
Altimeter at takeoff was 30.40. We both got distracted as we climbed through FL180 and forgot to transition to altimeter 29.92. We leveled at FL260 (actually FL255) a few mins at this altitude. Center then told us to check altimeter and climb to FL270. No conflict was noted. Several TA's occurred around our transition altitude, but more attention should have been devoted to the altimeter during this phase of flight.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A B737-400 FAILED TO RESET THEIR ALTIMETERS WHEN CLBING THROUGH FL180 RESULTING IN ATC INTERVENTION WHEN THEY LEVELED OFF 500 FT BELOW THEIR ASSIGNED ALT.
Narrative: ALTIMETER AT TKOF WAS 30.40. WE BOTH GOT DISTRACTED AS WE CLBED THROUGH FL180 AND FORGOT TO TRANSITION TO ALTIMETER 29.92. WE LEVELED AT FL260 (ACTUALLY FL255) A FEW MINS AT THIS ALT. CTR THEN TOLD US TO CHK ALTIMETER AND CLB TO FL270. NO CONFLICT WAS NOTED. SEVERAL TA'S OCCURRED AROUND OUR TRANSITION ALT, BUT MORE ATTN SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEVOTED TO THE ALTIMETER DURING THIS PHASE OF FLT.
