Narrative:
Departed sat, after a couple of vectors, we were issued a heading 060 degrees to join the lufkin transition on the alamo five departure. I understood this to mean intercept the course segment between ela and lfk vors. (See enclosed SID) after being handed off to next center controller, he rapidly issued a route clearance. I asked for the routing again and he stated we were north of course and needed to make a right turn to rejoin the san antonio five departure. At this point we realized he expected us to join the departure by intercepting the sat 081 degree radial (towards seeds intersection). Perhaps a better way to instruct us would have been to issue a heading to intercept a specific radial to resume the departure to eliminate any ambiguity or possible difference in interpretation. Also I will try to be more vigilant at requesting clarification when any possible ambiguities exist.

Title: A DA90 FLC HAS A PROB OF INTERP OF A CLRNC ON A HEADING FOR JOINING THE LUFKIN TRANSITION ON THE ALAMO 5 DEP PROC. SECOND CTLR DISPUTES THEIR POS AND ISSUES ANOTHER HEADING.
Narrative: DEPARTED SAT, AFTER A COUPLE OF VECTORS, WE WERE ISSUED A HDG 060 DEGS TO JOIN THE LUFKIN TRANSITION ON THE ALAMO FIVE DEP. I UNDERSTOOD THIS TO MEAN INTERCEPT THE COURSE SEGMENT BTWN ELA AND LFK VORS. (SEE ENCLOSED SID) AFTER BEING HANDED OFF TO NEXT CTR CTLR, HE RAPIDLY ISSUED A RTE CLRNC. I ASKED FOR THE ROUTING AGAIN AND HE STATED WE WERE N OF COURSE AND NEEDED TO MAKE A R TURN TO REJOIN THE SAN ANTONIO FIVE DEP. AT THIS POINT WE REALIZED HE EXPECTED US TO JOIN THE DEP BY INTERCEPTING THE SAT 081 DEG RADIAL (TOWARDS SEEDS INTXN). PERHAPS A BETTER WAY TO INSTRUCT US WOULD HAVE BEEN TO ISSUE A HEADING TO INTERCEPT A SPECIFIC RADIAL TO RESUME THE DEP TO ELIMINATE ANY AMBIGUITY OR POSSIBLE DIFFERENCE IN INTERP. ALSO I WILL TRY TO BE MORE VIGILANT AT REQUESTING CLARIFICATION WHEN ANY POSSIBLE AMBIGUITIES EXIST.
