Narrative:
ATC cleared us for descent to what I heard was 3000 ft. But first officer put 4000 ft in altitude selector. At 3500 ft first officer said we should have stopped at 4000 ft, so I climbed back to 4000 ft. ATC was busy so we never could verify altitude.

Title: COCKPIT CONFUSION REF THE ASSIGNED ALT. CAPT BELIEVES IT WAS 3000 FT AND FO SETS 4000 FT IN ALT SELECTOR. DSCNT IS STOPPED AT 3500 FT AND RETURN TO 4000 FT.
Narrative: ATC CLRED US FOR DSCNT TO WHAT I HEARD WAS 3000 FT. BUT FO PUT 4000 FT IN ALT SELECTOR. AT 3500 FT FO SAID WE SHOULD HAVE STOPPED AT 4000 FT, SO I CLBED BACK TO 4000 FT. ATC WAS BUSY SO WE NEVER COULD VERIFY ALT.
