Narrative:

On flight between gsp-phl, level at 15000 ft, there had been many delays due to strong surface winds in northeast. We had held (on dupont 3 arrival) at ott for approximately 40 mins and been slowed and stepped down (altitude) to 15000 ft. Out of the hold at ott we were cleared to phl via vectors. While on a vector, we received clearance, 'cleared to terri intersection, hold as published, efc XXXX.' I understood us cleared direct to terri, but as we started the turn, a frantic sounding controller stated he needed us on the arrival and gave us a vector to join the dupont 3 arrival. The rest of flight was uneventful. I should have clarified the clearance before pushing buttons on the FMC for the direct.

Title: AN ACR FK10 WAS CLRED TO HOLD AT AN INTXN ON A STAR AND THE FLC PROCEEDED DIRECTLY TOWARD THE INTXN, AS THEY WERE ALREADY ON VECTORS. HOWEVER, THE CTLR MEANT FOR THEM TO REJOIN AND PROCEED TO THE INTXN VIA THE STAR RTE. THIS CTLR VECTORED THEM BACK TO THE RTE.

Narrative: ON FLT BTWN GSP-PHL, LEVEL AT 15000 FT, THERE HAD BEEN MANY DELAYS DUE TO STRONG SURFACE WINDS IN NE. WE HAD HELD (ON DUPONT 3 ARR) AT OTT FOR APPROX 40 MINS AND BEEN SLOWED AND STEPPED DOWN (ALT) TO 15000 FT. OUT OF THE HOLD AT OTT WE WERE CLRED TO PHL VIA VECTORS. WHILE ON A VECTOR, WE RECEIVED CLRNC, 'CLRED TO TERRI INTXN, HOLD AS PUBLISHED, EFC XXXX.' I UNDERSTOOD US CLRED DIRECT TO TERRI, BUT AS WE STARTED THE TURN, A FRANTIC SOUNDING CTLR STATED HE NEEDED US ON THE ARR AND GAVE US A VECTOR TO JOIN THE DUPONT 3 ARR.
