Narrative:
On departure from jfk approximately 9000 ft encountered what we thought was jet wash from aircraft ahead. No abnormal engine indications. Over 2 mins later aft flight attendant informed a passenger had seen flash from right side of aircraft at time of encounter. We never had any abnormal indications in cockpit. After conferring with dispatch flight was continued to slc.
