Narrative:

Giving instruction in a rental C172 with the transponder certification running out dec/xa/97. During the 6 week period jan-feb/98, the aircraft logbooks were not available to me for inspection. Violation was discovered by a designated examiner before an FAA private check ride. To prevent a recurrence, check the logbooks before flying the aircraft, that the aircraft is airworthy with all the FARS completed and certified. Do not trust the owner, trust the logbooks.
