Narrative:
Upon return to sgr, I was informed by houston approach that I encroached in class B airspace by exceeding 4000 ft floor just inside outer radius. I was unaware of encroachment, believing I had climbed to 4500 ft MSL outside airspace limits as judged by ground references. Although houston approach stated the encroachment occurred inbound to sgr, it most likely occurred when flying outbound on 180- 360 degree heading at 4500 ft from iws airport. I was using city of brookshire as reference point outside of class B. Error probably occurred due to unawareness of exact aircraft position and exact class B boundary. Contributing factor may have been less focus due to only second passenger carried as a private pilot. Encroachment was in outer fringe of class B airspace. Error can be avoided in the future by allowing ample radial clearance outside class B limits before climbing to higher altitudes. This can be achieved by paying closer attention to aircraft position and airspace boundaries.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PVT PLT OF AN SMA SEL PENETRATED CLASS B AIRSPACE WHEN HE CLBED ABOVE THE FLOOR OF THE CTLED AIRSPACE PRIOR TO REACHING ITS OUTER LIMITS. APCH CTLR OBSERVED HIS FLT PATH AND INFORMED HIM OF HIS INCURSION UPON ARR TO HIS HOME BASE.
Narrative: UPON RETURN TO SGR, I WAS INFORMED BY HOUSTON APCH THAT I ENCROACHED IN CLASS B AIRSPACE BY EXCEEDING 4000 FT FLOOR JUST INSIDE OUTER RADIUS. I WAS UNAWARE OF ENCROACHMENT, BELIEVING I HAD CLBED TO 4500 FT MSL OUTSIDE AIRSPACE LIMITS AS JUDGED BY GND REFS. ALTHOUGH HOUSTON APCH STATED THE ENCROACHMENT OCCURRED INBOUND TO SGR, IT MOST LIKELY OCCURRED WHEN FLYING OUTBOUND ON 180- 360 DEG HDG AT 4500 FT FROM IWS ARPT. I WAS USING CITY OF BROOKSHIRE AS REF POINT OUTSIDE OF CLASS B. ERROR PROBABLY OCCURRED DUE TO UNAWARENESS OF EXACT ACFT POS AND EXACT CLASS B BOUNDARY. CONTRIBUTING FACTOR MAY HAVE BEEN LESS FOCUS DUE TO ONLY SECOND PAX CARRIED AS A PVT PLT. ENCROACHMENT WAS IN OUTER FRINGE OF CLASS B AIRSPACE. ERROR CAN BE AVOIDED IN THE FUTURE BY ALLOWING AMPLE RADIAL CLRNC OUTSIDE CLASS B LIMITS BEFORE CLBING TO HIGHER ALTS. THIS CAN BE ACHIEVED BY PAYING CLOSER ATTN TO ACFT POS AND AIRSPACE BOUNDARIES.
