Narrative:
Departed nuq for a routine military training mission to include numerous approachs at moffet prior to our training mission. After our first approach and landing we stopped the aircraft during taxi to change coplts. The second copilot was in the process of getting in the seat. At this time #3 engine t-handle fire light illuminated giving a steady indication. The second copilot was not yet hooked up on the intercom system. Although the copilot could not hear the crew communicating, he was aware of the #3 t-handle fire light. The crew accomplished the emergency checklist for the affected engine and discharged the first fire bottle agent. The t-handle fire light was still illuminated. The second and last fire bottle agent was discharged with the same result. The crew accomplished the emergency shutdown of the remaining 3 engines. The pilot called ground for crash fire response and initiated emergency ground egress. The crew egressed without incident. Crash fire responded within 2 mins of the initial call to ground. No fire was found and the aircraft was turned over to maintenance. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the false warning was caused by shorted and defective wiring on the fire warning system aft of the firewall but located in the #3 engine nacelle.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A LOCKHEED HC130P WHILE TAXIING DECLARED AN EMER DUE TO A #3 ENG FIRE WARNING.
Narrative: DEPARTED NUQ FOR A ROUTINE MIL TRAINING MISSION TO INCLUDE NUMEROUS APCHS AT MOFFET PRIOR TO OUR TRAINING MISSION. AFTER OUR FIRST APCH AND LNDG WE STOPPED THE ACFT DURING TAXI TO CHANGE COPLTS. THE SECOND COPLT WAS IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING IN THE SEAT. AT THIS TIME #3 ENG T-HANDLE FIRE LIGHT ILLUMINATED GIVING A STEADY INDICATION. THE SECOND COPLT WAS NOT YET HOOKED UP ON THE INTERCOM SYS. ALTHOUGH THE COPLT COULD NOT HEAR THE CREW COMMUNICATING, HE WAS AWARE OF THE #3 T-HANDLE FIRE LIGHT. THE CREW ACCOMPLISHED THE EMER CHKLIST FOR THE AFFECTED ENG AND DISCHARGED THE FIRST FIRE BOTTLE AGENT. THE T-HANDLE FIRE LIGHT WAS STILL ILLUMINATED. THE SECOND AND LAST FIRE BOTTLE AGENT WAS DISCHARGED WITH THE SAME RESULT. THE CREW ACCOMPLISHED THE EMER SHUTDOWN OF THE REMAINING 3 ENGS. THE PLT CALLED GND FOR CRASH FIRE RESPONSE AND INITIATED EMER GND EGRESS. THE CREW EGRESSED WITHOUT INCIDENT. CRASH FIRE RESPONDED WITHIN 2 MINS OF THE INITIAL CALL TO GND. NO FIRE WAS FOUND AND THE ACFT WAS TURNED OVER TO MAINT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE FALSE WARNING WAS CAUSED BY SHORTED AND DEFECTIVE WIRING ON THE FIRE WARNING SYS AFT OF THE FIREWALL BUT LOCATED IN THE #3 ENG NACELLE.
