Narrative:
Flight was from mci to mem. Landed runway 36R, then taxied to south Z. Captain continued taxi into gate X before green light was on (director lights were on). Halfway into the gate a ground worker signaled stop (without wands). The first officer and I then told the captain about the person's signal and he stopped the aircraft. The captain then asked me several questions about what time we were supposed to be at the gate. (We were 3 mins early) and when I looked up we were in final parking position. I had no idea the aircraft had struck an object until I was told by a supervisor over an hour later. Captain continued taxi into gate that was not clear (ie, the green light was not on). Maintenance was not prepared to meet the flight with appropriate signaling device -- wands. They could not signal aircraft to stay clear to ensure aircraft was not going to hit any objects. Supplemental information from acn 394650: taxiing into gate X, left wingtip grazed loader which was parked inside foul line. Air carrier ramp very congested in this area.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B727-200 WHILE TAXIING ON TO A GATE WITHOUT DIRECTOR LIGHT OR WAND GUIDANCE STRUCK A CARGO LOADER INCURRING DAMAGE TO THE L WINGTIP.
Narrative: FLT WAS FROM MCI TO MEM. LANDED RWY 36R, THEN TAXIED TO SOUTH Z. CAPT CONTINUED TAXI INTO GATE X BEFORE GREEN LIGHT WAS ON (DIRECTOR LIGHTS WERE ON). HALFWAY INTO THE GATE A GND WORKER SIGNALED STOP (WITHOUT WANDS). THE FO AND I THEN TOLD THE CAPT ABOUT THE PERSON'S SIGNAL AND HE STOPPED THE ACFT. THE CAPT THEN ASKED ME SEVERAL QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT TIME WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE AT THE GATE. (WE WERE 3 MINS EARLY) AND WHEN I LOOKED UP WE WERE IN FINAL PARKING POS. I HAD NO IDEA THE ACFT HAD STRUCK AN OBJECT UNTIL I WAS TOLD BY A SUPVR OVER AN HR LATER. CAPT CONTINUED TAXI INTO GATE THAT WAS NOT CLR (IE, THE GREEN LIGHT WAS NOT ON). MAINT WAS NOT PREPARED TO MEET THE FLT WITH APPROPRIATE SIGNALING DEVICE -- WANDS. THEY COULD NOT SIGNAL ACFT TO STAY CLR TO ENSURE ACFT WAS NOT GOING TO HIT ANY OBJECTS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 394650: TAXIING INTO GATE X, L WINGTIP GRAZED LOADER WHICH WAS PARKED INSIDE FOUL LINE. ACR RAMP VERY CONGESTED IN THIS AREA.
