Narrative:
Navigation error. First officer flew aco-jst direct instead of actual clearance (145 degree radial to J518 then J152 jst). Flight plan was direct. First officer didn't brief captain. Captain didn't xchk. Prior to departure captain was out of cockpit coordinating passenger loading. First officer obtained flight clearance via clearance delivery. Captain returned to cockpit and asked first officer if clearance had been obtained. First officer acknowledged affirmative. Captain inquired if clearance was 'as filed.' first officer replied 'yes, and here's what we have to do for the departure.' unfamiliar SID was immediate point of discussion and briefing. Captain 'assumed' the rest of route of flight was as per computer flight plan. SID was flown as depicted by first officer. Computer flight plan included aco direct jst. Actual clearance required aco 145 degree radial to intercept J518 then J152 jst. First officer flew aco direct jst as per computer flight plan. 20 mi out of aco, center inquired about assigned route of flight and navigation error was acknowledged.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LGT ACFT FLC FLEW WRONG ROUTING WHEN CAPT RELIED ON FO'S BRIEF. FO BRIEFED CORRECTLY FOR THE DEP SID, BUT FAILED TO NOTICE THE ROUTING CHANGE FROM THE FILED FLT PLAN. CTR CTLR DIDN'T INTERVENE UNTIL ACFT WAS 20 MI FROM DEST.
Narrative: NAV ERROR. FO FLEW ACO-JST DIRECT INSTEAD OF ACTUAL CLRNC (145 DEG RADIAL TO J518 THEN J152 JST). FLT PLAN WAS DIRECT. FO DIDN'T BRIEF CAPT. CAPT DIDN'T XCHK. PRIOR TO DEP CAPT WAS OUT OF COCKPIT COORDINATING PAX LOADING. FO OBTAINED FLT CLRNC VIA CLRNC DELIVERY. CAPT RETURNED TO COCKPIT AND ASKED FO IF CLRNC HAD BEEN OBTAINED. FO ACKNOWLEDGED AFFIRMATIVE. CAPT INQUIRED IF CLRNC WAS 'AS FILED.' FO REPLIED 'YES, AND HERE'S WHAT WE HAVE TO DO FOR THE DEP.' UNFAMILIAR SID WAS IMMEDIATE POINT OF DISCUSSION AND BRIEFING. CAPT 'ASSUMED' THE REST OF RTE OF FLT WAS AS PER COMPUTER FLT PLAN. SID WAS FLOWN AS DEPICTED BY FO. COMPUTER FLT PLAN INCLUDED ACO DIRECT JST. ACTUAL CLRNC REQUIRED ACO 145 DEG RADIAL TO INTERCEPT J518 THEN J152 JST. FO FLEW ACO DIRECT JST AS PER COMPUTER FLT PLAN. 20 MI OUT OF ACO, CTR INQUIRED ABOUT ASSIGNED RTE OF FLT AND NAV ERROR WAS ACKNOWLEDGED.
