Narrative:
Nose gear alert after gear retraction following takeoff. The gear handle was recycled, obtaining the normal 'down, 3 green' indication when the handle was down, but in the up position the nose gear alert reappeared. The gear handle in- transit light also remained illuminated and vibration was felt and heard to emanate from the nose gear area. Discussion with maintenance and dispatcher led to returning to field. An emergency was declared so as to have crash fire rescue equipment standing by. Normal landing was followed by normal rollout and turnoff. Crash fire rescue equipment was secured and taxi-in to gate was completed.
