Narrative:

Pushback gru #2 engine started. Tug started pulling us forward. I heard a loud bang and the aircraft started accelerating forward. At the same time, ground person started frantically yelling park brake, park brake. I knew something had malfunctioned and we were about to run over the tug. I abruptly applied the brakes and set park brake. I asked if they were ok on ground. They said yes. Told first officer to watch aircraft. Went to check cabin attendants. #5 cabin attendant had been thrown forward into B/C galley facing backwards hurting her back and leg. Cabin attendant #7 had been thrown forward facing forward hurting her rib and breast area. Both indicated that they were sore, but felt they were ok to continue to mia. They were not cut, but bruised. Maintenance now involved. Aircraft and nose gear found ok. Tug was removed. Tow bar had broken tug and had jackknifed. I believe that if I had not stopped as quickly as I did, we would have run over it because it never became disconnected until maintenance got it apart.
