Narrative:

Captain received clearance and dialed altitude preselector 2000 ft. On taxi out I set the altitude to 3000 ft which was on the SID. Upon departure we encountered moderate to severe turbulence and was advised by departure control on our altitude as we were passing through 2500 ft. I should have briefed the altitude on the takeoff briefing. Instead I assumed the altitude on the SID.
