Narrative:
Prior to reaching otk we were cleared to clawz. According to the first officer we were also given a clearance to cross clawz at FL270 and that I acknowledged that clearance. I only recall the clearance to go direct clawz. Be that as it may, I did not start a descent until ATC had asked us about our descent to FL270 over clawz. At that time I thought 'this is a very late clearance.' the first officer then informed me that we had received the clearance earlier. We then expedited our descent to FL270. As far as we know there was no conflict with other traffic. ATC did give us a vector off course to accomplish the descent. Supplemental information from acn 396217: prior to reaching otk, we were cleared direct clawz and to cross clawz at FL270. I set FL270 in the altitude alert and thought the captain acknowledged the clearance. Center directed a frequency change to 132.82. I checked in and gave our crossing clearance. I was busy readying for arrival when ATC asked us over clawz if we were descending.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B727 CREW FAILS TO MAKE A XING RESTR. INADEQUATE CREW COORD ON A CLRNC THAT HAD BEEN RECEIVED.
Narrative: PRIOR TO REACHING OTK WE WERE CLRED TO CLAWZ. ACCORDING TO THE FO WE WERE ALSO GIVEN A CLRNC TO CROSS CLAWZ AT FL270 AND THAT I ACKNOWLEDGED THAT CLRNC. I ONLY RECALL THE CLRNC TO GO DIRECT CLAWZ. BE THAT AS IT MAY, I DID NOT START A DSCNT UNTIL ATC HAD ASKED US ABOUT OUR DSCNT TO FL270 OVER CLAWZ. AT THAT TIME I THOUGHT 'THIS IS A VERY LATE CLRNC.' THE FO THEN INFORMED ME THAT WE HAD RECEIVED THE CLRNC EARLIER. WE THEN EXPEDITED OUR DSCNT TO FL270. AS FAR AS WE KNOW THERE WAS NO CONFLICT WITH OTHER TFC. ATC DID GIVE US A VECTOR OFF COURSE TO ACCOMPLISH THE DSCNT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 396217: PRIOR TO REACHING OTK, WE WERE CLRED DIRECT CLAWZ AND TO CROSS CLAWZ AT FL270. I SET FL270 IN THE ALT ALERT AND THOUGHT THE CAPT ACKNOWLEDGED THE CLRNC. CTR DIRECTED A FREQ CHANGE TO 132.82. I CHKED IN AND GAVE OUR XING CLRNC. I WAS BUSY READYING FOR ARR WHEN ATC ASKED US OVER CLAWZ IF WE WERE DSNDING.
