Narrative:
We were told by cdg tower control to 'line up and wait on runway 10 at cdg.' we read back to cdg tower 'cleared to line up and wait on runway 10.' the first officer observed an aircraft on final, but it appeared to be at least 5 mi from touchdown to runway 10. We taxied into 'position and hold' runway 10. After approximately 1-2 mins, tower control came up and said to the effect that we were to have lined up after the traffic on final had landed. All 3 crew members only heard the 'line up and wait runway 10' instruction from the tower. The tower controller directed the traffic on final to runway 10 to 'go around' at which time the traffic went around. Approximately 1 min later, our flight was cleared for takeoff. All 3 crew members recollect only hearing the 'line up and wait runway 10' instruction with no further amplifying remarks from cdg tower. The first officer read back to cdg tower only the 'line up and wait runway 10' instruction. It was also the first officer's observation that there was ample time for our aircraft to 'line up and wait' and then eventually take off without conflicting with the arrival traffic. None of the 3 crew members recollecting any tower communications with the arrival traffic prior to its instruction to 'go around.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR MD11 FREIGHTER FLC TAXIED ONTO AN ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT PERMISSION CAUSING AN APCHING ACFT TO GAR. THE FLC, APPARENTLY, WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH THE ICAO TERM 'LINE UP AND WAIT.'
Narrative: WE WERE TOLD BY CDG TWR CTL TO 'LINE UP AND WAIT ON RWY 10 AT CDG.' WE READ BACK TO CDG TWR 'CLRED TO LINE UP AND WAIT ON RWY 10.' THE FO OBSERVED AN ACFT ON FINAL, BUT IT APPEARED TO BE AT LEAST 5 MI FROM TOUCHDOWN TO RWY 10. WE TAXIED INTO 'POS AND HOLD' RWY 10. AFTER APPROX 1-2 MINS, TWR CTL CAME UP AND SAID TO THE EFFECT THAT WE WERE TO HAVE LINED UP AFTER THE TFC ON FINAL HAD LANDED. ALL 3 CREW MEMBERS ONLY HEARD THE 'LINE UP AND WAIT RWY 10' INSTRUCTION FROM THE TWR. THE TWR CTLR DIRECTED THE TFC ON FINAL TO RWY 10 TO 'GAR' AT WHICH TIME THE TFC WENT AROUND. APPROX 1 MIN LATER, OUR FLT WAS CLRED FOR TKOF. ALL 3 CREW MEMBERS RECOLLECT ONLY HEARING THE 'LINE UP AND WAIT RWY 10' INSTRUCTION WITH NO FURTHER AMPLIFYING REMARKS FROM CDG TWR. THE FO READ BACK TO CDG TWR ONLY THE 'LINE UP AND WAIT RWY 10' INSTRUCTION. IT WAS ALSO THE FO'S OBSERVATION THAT THERE WAS AMPLE TIME FOR OUR ACFT TO 'LINE UP AND WAIT' AND THEN EVENTUALLY TAKE OFF WITHOUT CONFLICTING WITH THE ARR TFC. NONE OF THE 3 CREW MEMBERS RECOLLECTING ANY TWR COMS WITH THE ARR TFC PRIOR TO ITS INSTRUCTION TO 'GAR.'
