Narrative:

Over the maspeth tanks on the expressway visual approach to runway 31, we were cleared to slow to 170 KTS, descend from 4000 ft and follow a commuter aircraft on the downwind. While descending, slowing, configuring and searching for the small traffic, we did not hear approach control switch us to tower. Meanwhile, approach control was vectoring other aircraft in the pattern with reference to us, as the tower would have. As a result we landed on runway 31 while still on approach control frequency.
