Narrative:
After landing at ewr on runway 22L, we exited on taxiway V and the front enders contacted tower for taxi. They were told to hold short of runway 22R. I switched to my radio prior to this and was talking to our ramp control for a parking spot and entry point. Pilot was over the hold short line for runway 22R when first officer said 'we're supposed to hold short!' crew contacted tower and advised they were partly on the runway 22R and tower said to expedite across since landing traffic was on final. We cleared the runway without incident. Pilot had expected a turn off at taxiway north and was keyed to see parallel taxiway P before runway 22R. Changing exit point to taxiway V, coupled with dusk skylight and dim runway/taxiway lights, added to the confusion. Greater vigilance by all crew would have helped prevent the incursion. Both the first officer and I were distraction by non essential operations. We should have kept a closer eye on our surroundings until clear of the active runway environment.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DC10 FLC TAXIES OVER THE HOLD SHORT LINE OF A PARALLEL RWY AS THEY TURN OFF AFTER ROLLOUT. TWR CLRS THEM TO QUICKLY CROSS THE RWY.
Narrative: AFTER LNDG AT EWR ON RWY 22L, WE EXITED ON TXWY V AND THE FRONT ENDERS CONTACTED TWR FOR TAXI. THEY WERE TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 22R. I SWITCHED TO MY RADIO PRIOR TO THIS AND WAS TALKING TO OUR RAMP CTL FOR A PARKING SPOT AND ENTRY POINT. PLT WAS OVER THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 22R WHEN FO SAID 'WE'RE SUPPOSED TO HOLD SHORT!' CREW CONTACTED TWR AND ADVISED THEY WERE PARTLY ON THE RWY 22R AND TWR SAID TO EXPEDITE ACROSS SINCE LNDG TFC WAS ON FINAL. WE CLRED THE RWY WITHOUT INCIDENT. PLT HAD EXPECTED A TURN OFF AT TXWY N AND WAS KEYED TO SEE PARALLEL TXWY P BEFORE RWY 22R. CHANGING EXIT POINT TO TXWY V, COUPLED WITH DUSK SKYLIGHT AND DIM RWY/TXWY LIGHTS, ADDED TO THE CONFUSION. GREATER VIGILANCE BY ALL CREW WOULD HAVE HELPED PREVENT THE INCURSION. BOTH THE FO AND I WERE DISTR BY NON ESSENTIAL OPS. WE SHOULD HAVE KEPT A CLOSER EYE ON OUR SURROUNDINGS UNTIL CLR OF THE ACTIVE RWY ENVIRONMENT.
