Narrative:
Location: 36 mi on the runway 24R ILS at lax. Vectors to intercept the civet 3 and then the runway 25L ILS lax. Had many stepdowns prior to intercept. Then a new course to fly the mitts 1 arrival and fly the runway 24R ILS lax. Cleared to snrkl and maintain 12000 ft. Then cleared cross snrkl at or above 10000 ft and cleared mitts 1 arrival. After passing snrkl and completing checklists and identing the new arrival and ILS to runway 24R, I misread the next stepdown as jonzz instead of the correct fix mitts. A slow descent started at approximately 38 DME. At 36 DME controller asked us to stop descent. We were at 9750 ft MSL and at 36 DME. We climbed back to 10000 ft MSL. Approach control cleared to 8000 ft MSL and continued to give us stepdowns until clearing us for the visual to runway 24R.

Title: B757 ACFT ON STAR ARR, RPTR CAPT MISREAD STEPDOWN ALT AND DSNDED BELOW XING RESTR. APCH CTLR INTERVENED TO STOP THE DSCNT.
Narrative: LOCATION: 36 MI ON THE RWY 24R ILS AT LAX. VECTORS TO INTERCEPT THE CIVET 3 AND THEN THE RWY 25L ILS LAX. HAD MANY STEPDOWNS PRIOR TO INTERCEPT. THEN A NEW COURSE TO FLY THE MITTS 1 ARR AND FLY THE RWY 24R ILS LAX. CLRED TO SNRKL AND MAINTAIN 12000 FT. THEN CLRED CROSS SNRKL AT OR ABOVE 10000 FT AND CLRED MITTS 1 ARR. AFTER PASSING SNRKL AND COMPLETING CHKLISTS AND IDENTING THE NEW ARR AND ILS TO RWY 24R, I MISREAD THE NEXT STEPDOWN AS JONZZ INSTEAD OF THE CORRECT FIX MITTS. A SLOW DSCNT STARTED AT APPROX 38 DME. AT 36 DME CTLR ASKED US TO STOP DSCNT. WE WERE AT 9750 FT MSL AND AT 36 DME. WE CLBED BACK TO 10000 FT MSL. APCH CTL CLRED TO 8000 FT MSL AND CONTINUED TO GIVE US STEPDOWNS UNTIL CLRING US FOR THE VISUAL TO RWY 24R.
