Narrative:
Passing FL180 on descent for arrival to rno, ZOA cleared us to 12000 ft. While passing 13500 ft, ZOA asked what altitude we were at. Following my response, ZOA asked what altitude we were cleared to. When I responded, '12000 ft,' ZOA replied, 'maintain 14000 ft.' we immediately climbed to 14000 ft.
