Narrative:
After takeoff from dfw, lost all hydraulic fluid in left system from break in line in left wheel well. Complied with operations manual, including alternate flap and alternate gear extension. Returned dfw for uneventful landing and tow to gate due no steering. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the aircraft was a B757-200 and the loss of the left hydraulic pressure and quantity was caused by a failed left main gear down lock flexible return line. The reporter said the flexible line was replaced and the system svced. Callback conversation with reporter from acn 393294 revealed the following information: the reporter stated the hydraulic failure was caused by a flexible line in the left wheel well, but did not know the function of the line.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B757-200 ON INITIAL CLB AT 12000 FT DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO THE L HYD SYS LOSS OF PRESSURE AND QUANTITY CAUSED BY A FAILED FLEXIBLE RETURN LINE ON THE L MAIN GEAR DOWN LOCK ACTUATOR.
Narrative: AFTER TKOF FROM DFW, LOST ALL HYD FLUID IN L SYS FROM BREAK IN LINE IN L WHEEL WELL. COMPLIED WITH OPS MANUAL, INCLUDING ALTERNATE FLAP AND ALTERNATE GEAR EXTENSION. RETURNED DFW FOR UNEVENTFUL LNDG AND TOW TO GATE DUE NO STEERING. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ACFT WAS A B757-200 AND THE LOSS OF THE L HYD PRESSURE AND QUANTITY WAS CAUSED BY A FAILED L MAIN GEAR DOWN LOCK FLEXIBLE RETURN LINE. THE RPTR SAID THE FLEXIBLE LINE WAS REPLACED AND THE SYS SVCED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR FROM ACN 393294 REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE HYD FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY A FLEXIBLE LINE IN THE L WHEEL WELL, BUT DID NOT KNOW THE FUNCTION OF THE LINE.
